Anatomy of a turnaround

How a struggling A-level cohort rebuilt its results in three years

St. Bernadette Girls’ Secondary, Masaka · 12 May 2026

01 · Challenge

Four consecutive years of slipping UACE division-one rates had left morale low and admissions softening. Teachers blamed the syllabus; parents blamed the teachers. Nobody had the numbers to say which subjects were actually losing marks, or where in the two-year cycle students fell behind.

02 · Approach

The new head split the problem into measurable pieces: a termly mock pegged to the real grading bands, subject-level mark tracking, and a standing Friday clinic where the three weakest performers per stream met their teacher one-to-one. Crucially, nothing about contact hours changed, the school worked the same timetable, just with sight of where it was leaking marks.

03 · Outcome

By the third cohort, division-one passes had nearly doubled and the school re-entered the district’s top ten. The quieter win was retention: families that once transferred out at the end of S5 now stayed, and word-of-mouth applications climbed without a shilling spent on advertising.

“We didn't add hours or change the syllabus. We just stopped guessing where the marks were going.”
