Frequently asked questions

Montessori schools, answered.

What is the Montessori method?

Montessori is an educational approach developed by Italian physician Maria Montessori in the early 1900s. It centres on child-led learning in prepared environments, mixed-age classrooms (3–6, 6–9, 9–12), sensorial materials, and long uninterrupted work cycles in which children choose their own activities under the guidance of a trained Montessori adult.

How do I tell an authentic Montessori school from a Montessori-themed one?

Authentic Montessori schools are typically accredited by AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) or AMS (American Montessori Society), employ trained Montessori guides (not "teachers"), use the full Montessori materials, and run mixed-age classrooms with uninterrupted three-hour work cycles. "Montessori-themed" schools borrow the name and some materials but may revert to teacher-led, single-age classes.

Does Montessori work with the Ugandan UNEB system?

Most Montessori schools in Uganda run pure Montessori through the 3–6 (nursery) and sometimes 6–12 (lower elementary) cycles, then transition into UNEB Primary for the PLE-preparation years (P5–P7). A small number run Montessori through the elementary years and prepare for international curricula such as IB at secondary.

Is Montessori only for nursery age?

No, the Montessori method extends through adolescence (12–18). In Uganda, most Montessori provision is concentrated in the 3–6 nursery years, with a smaller set of schools offering Montessori through age 12. Adolescent Montessori (Erdkinder) is rare in Uganda.
