Frequently asked questions

Catholic schools, answered.

Which schools count as "Catholic" on Praecip?

We include schools founded or sponsored by the Roman Catholic Church, whether currently run as government-aided mission schools or as private Catholic institutions. Many of Uganda's oldest schools, St. Mary's College Kisubi, Namilyango College, Mt. St. Mary's Namagunga, St. Joseph's College Layibi, and others, sit in this group.

Are Catholic schools open to non-Catholic learners?

Yes. In Uganda, the vast majority of Catholic-founded schools admit learners of any faith. Religious Education and Mass form part of school life, and learners are typically expected to participate, but admission is not restricted to Catholic families.

Are Catholic schools government-aided or private?

Both. Historic mission schools are usually government-aided, built on Catholic Diocese land, with the Diocese retaining founding-body rights, but funded through the Ministry of Education. Newer Catholic schools tend to be private, run by religious congregations (Jesuits, Comboni, Don Bosco) or by Diocesan trusts.

What's the difference between a Diocesan school and a congregation school?

Diocesan schools are owned by the local Catholic Diocese (e.g. Kampala Archdiocese, Mbarara Archdiocese). Congregation schools are owned by a specific religious order, the Jesuits run Ocer Campion Jesuit College in Gulu, the Comboni Missionaries run Comboni College Lira, the Salesians (Don Bosco) run a network around Kampala. The teaching emphasis often differs in subtle ways.
