Frequently asked questions

Girls' schools, answered.

What counts as a girls' school?

A school that admits only female learners. We list schools that are girls-only at the level of admission, regardless of whether the campus shares a site with a boys' brother school. Co-educational schools, even those that maintain separate girls' boarding houses, are not included here.

Which are Uganda's most prestigious girls' schools?

Gayaza High School, Mt. St. Mary's College Namagunga, Nabisunsa Girls' School, Trinity College Nabbingo, Maryhill High School, Tororo Girls' School, Bweranyangi Girls' SS, Wanyange Girls' School and Sacred Heart SS Gulu are among the most established and competitive girls' schools, with strong UCE/UACE performance and active old-girls networks.

Are girls' schools typically boarding or day?

The historic girls' schools are almost all boarding, often with a long tradition behind it. Newer private girls' schools more commonly offer both day and boarding. Five-day boarding (Monday–Friday) is increasingly common as urban parents balance the structure of boarding with home time.

What S1 cut-off is needed for a top girls' school?

The most competitive girls' schools (Gayaza, Namagunga, Nabisunsa) typically expect a PLE Aggregate of 4–7 for direct S1 entry. Government-aided girls' schools further down the ladder cut off between Aggregate 8 and 14 depending on the year. Cut-offs are published per school on Praecip where confirmed.
