Frequently asked questions

Teachers' training colleges, answered.

What is the difference between a PTC and an NTC?

A PTC (Primary Teachers' College) prepares teachers for primary schools (P1–P7) and awards the Grade III Teacher Certificate after a two-year programme. An NTC (National Teachers' College) prepares teachers for the lower-secondary years (S1–S4) and awards the Grade V Teacher Diploma after a two-year programme. Both are coordinated by the Ministry of Education and Sports.

What are the entry requirements?

PTCs require UCE with credits in at least six subjects including English. NTCs require UACE with two principal passes, plus a credit in English at UCE. University-based Bachelor of Education programmes require UACE principal passes typically including the subjects the candidate intends to teach.

Are these the only routes to teaching in Uganda?

No. The graduate route, a Bachelor of Education from a Ugandan university, is the most common path into A-Level teaching and increasingly common at all levels. Postgraduate certificates in education (PGCE) are also offered by several universities for graduates wanting to convert into teaching from another discipline.

How is government sponsorship handled at PTCs and NTCs?

A substantial number of slots at government-aided PTCs and NTCs are funded by the Ministry, typically allocated through the central admissions cycle following UCE / UACE results. Government-sponsored students pay minimal personal contribution; privately-sponsored students at the same colleges pay the full fee structure.
