Frequently asked questions

Seminary schools, answered.

What is a seminary school?

A minor seminary is a secondary school run by a Catholic Diocese or Anglican Province that combines the standard UNEB curriculum with religious formation. Pupils typically board, follow a daily prayer and Mass routine, and discern whether to continue to a major seminary for priestly training after S6.

Are seminary schools only for boys?

Catholic minor seminaries in Uganda are almost exclusively for boys, since they prepare candidates for the Catholic priesthood (a male-only vocation). A handful of Anglican-tradition seminary-style formation schools admit girls.

Do seminary pupils have to become priests?

No. Most pupils at minor seminaries eventually choose other professions. The seminary is a discernment environment, pupils can leave at any stage and pursue university or other vocations after UCE or UACE. Many of Uganda's prominent professionals are seminary alumni.

Are seminary schools open to non-Catholics or non-Christians?

In principle yes, but in practice the daily liturgical life and the discernment focus make seminaries the natural choice for committed Catholic or Anglican families. Admission policies vary, some Dioceses admit only baptised Catholics; others are open to all faiths.
